MP Odorizer

MP Odorizer

Peerless MP odorizers were manufactured in the 1950’s and early 60s. The MP’s are easy to identify by the three separate tanks stacked vertically. The top tank is for storage, the middle tank contains the mercaptan odorizer compartment, the bottom tank is an overflow tank. MP odorizers can be extremely dangerous if handled improperly.

A few points to consider:

1. MP odorizers must never be laid down.

2. Over time, the internal parts of the MP odorizer will deteriorate and rust which will make it more difficult, dangerous, and time-consuming to remediate.

3. Movement of a MP odorizer may cause internal pressure to build to dangerous levels.

4. A few MP odorizers have had other liquids, masking agents, bleach, etc. introduced inside that can react with mercaptan and other parts that can cause an extremely dangerous bleve explosion.

5. Manipulating any valves will move and mix mercaptan from the bottom tank to top tank to the odorizer compartment that could lead to over pressurization.

6. It is difficult to determine how much mercaptan is in the MP odorizer.
